Scarlet Chested Parakeet

Without doubt, the Scarlet-chested Parakeet is one of the most beautiful birds in the world. This feathered beauty has the personality to match its looks.

Even kept as a pair in a flight, Scarlet-chesteds soon become trusting enough to eat out of their keeper's hand. Inquisitive and active, these little birds always seem to have something going on. Most of their day is spent foraging on the cage bottom for food, investigating the surroundings or just sitting side-by-side with their mate.

When housed in a large aviary with other peace-loving birds, such as Bourke Parakeets or finches, they are calm and not disruptive. Another advantage is their quiet little sing-song voice.

This is an ideal bird for apartment dwellers that have the space for a roomy flight. Scarlet-chesteds, just like the other Neophemas, should always be kept as a pair with plenty of room to fly. Above all, this is an aviary bird that is very lively and won't do well in a small cage.

When kept outdoors, it is important that the delicate Scarlet-chested is protected from the elements. Avoid drafts, dampness, and reduce humidity in order to ensure their longevity. An appropriate diet is essential to keep them in peek health and breeding condition.

Scarlet-chested parakeets have more mutations than any other Neophema, but they are not recommended for the inexperienced aviculturist.

There are three color phases of the blue mutation. The seagreen, the par-blue and the white-breasted blue. The latter is the most desirable and expensive, but also the weakest of the blue mutations.

The par-blue is a beautiful greenish-blue with a cream belly. The male has a peach colored chest. Par-blues vary in color, depending on the bloodlines. They can vary from green-blue to dark blue. This mutation is normal recessive.

This is a par-blue Scarlet-chested hen; females are a softer shade of blue, with pale cream colored bellies.

Scarlet Chested Seagreen Male

The seagreen is quite uncommon. The bird is gray-green, with a creamy yellow stomach. The male's chest patch is orange. Again, there can be a lot of variation in the different bloodlines of seagreens. This is a recessive mutation.
