Elegant Parakeet
|
The mostly green Elegant parakeets are hardy and easy to care for.
Elegant are not as popular as their more brilliantly colored relatives, which is unfortunate since these graceful birds are appealing aviary subjects. The male's courtship displays, during which he raises himself to his full height and bows to the hen, are interesting to watch. Although I have kept them in community flights without problems, a friend reports that his Elegant routinely dive bomb the Bourkes.
These birds are agile flyers and are best kept in a large flight. This also will accommodate their shy personalities.
Males have wider blue brows and occasional red thumbnail splashes on their abdomens.

The Lutino Elegant is a newer mutation. The bird is a beautiful, bright yellow, with white highlights on the face and wings. It is recessive.
|
The Pied Elegant is also a new mutation. The amount of yellow varies, with good pieds being more than 50% yellow.
Interestingly, this mutation is dominant. This means that only one parent needs to be pied in order for some of the offspring to show these unusual markings.

This is an Elegant hen; males have wider frontal bands and most (though not all) have a red spot on the lower abdomen. Hens lack this marking.
